D'ignazio & Klein seeks to challenge and reframe the cultural understanding of objectivity and neutrality attached to data and visualizations. Through a feminist and critical approach, we see that emotion, context and experience are legitimate sources of knowledge in data science. Feminist data design seeks to integrate feelings, ethics and experience into collection, analysis and communication and thereby propose that curators should make their own position visible, show affected communities and design with awareness of power when making visualisation.
The feminist approach wants to include accountability in data science and an understanding that all data, visualized or otherwise, are shaped by human standpoints. This approach wants the viewer to ask critical questions based on what, how and who when looking at visual data.
