Excerpt from written assignment:

After collecting the 20 items I moved on to digitizing them, by taking photos of each analogue object. This action is also the first step of abstraction and therefore the beginning of building my dataset. I then transferred all the photos into an excel spreadsheet, where I could add my variables. I chose the six following variables: Type of product, Price (kr), Dominant colour of packaging (covers more than 50% of the product), How well I feel that it lives up to the expectations set on the label (scale 1-10), Purchased more than once and Brand. I wanted to create a dataset that included some numerical and more “objective” datapoints, such as price and brand. However, I also saw the need for my dataset to present categorical and interpretative datapoints, such as colour and fulfilment of expectations. This entire process is a representation of Kitchin’s statement “data are not simply given, but are taken – captured through observation, measurement, or sensing – and thus are better conceptualised as capta” (Kitchin, 2022, p. 26). My dataset reflects this as I have created a version of reality through the choices that I have made regarding what to include and exclude (Kitchin, 2022).
