Excerpt from written assignment:
The process of datafying the collection has made it obvious that data is never neutral. As Kitchin describes it, data is not universal but rather situational, shaped by context and created through specific choices (Kitchin, 2022). When collecting the 20 objects that should create my dataset, I caught myself thinking I needed to find jewellery pieces from different occasions to represent different parts of my life and the people in it, but also to vary the data in each attribute I chose. The curator will, rather it is intentional or not, have an idea behind creating the data, whether it is sparked from interest, a search for information on the topic etc. In my own process I noticed that the process of curating data is not only about what the dataset includes, but also about what is excluded However, the collection holds pieces that are tied to emotional and affective value, which gives them a deeper meaning than the selected attributes can capture. These objects cannot be fully captured through these structured variables alone. Though it gives a categorised insight in the collection this also brings forward the limitations of datafication and to show the information that is left out when translating objects into data.
